Thursday Thirteen # 27: Back to School Thoughts

The kids are heading back to school this Monday…hurray! I’m not the only one cheering. They like school too. They are anxiously waiting to see their class lists, teachers and schedules posted. They also have been ticking off their back to school needs that we must rush out and get now. I love that because they share these lists with me as if I might not really know what your average pre-schooler, 5th grader, 8th grader and high school freshman will need to get started on the first day of school. I keep reminding them that I am not an amateur in this department. I know it is just part of their anticipation.
So while we continue to count down the days (five) here is my Back to School Thursday Thirteen.

  1. My all time favorite back to school commercial is the Staples’ “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” commercial where the parents are dancing gleefully behind the shopping cart while the kids trudge along behind them.
  2. The new one using the Easy Button is funny too.
  3. Bill and I have been teasing the kids asking them to go ahead and hit out Easy Button that sits on the computer desk.
  4. I think they are afraid that they will be deluged with school supplies.
  5. Still, wouldn’t it be cool if that did happen. Think of the $ we would save! I wonder…
  6. I am thrilled to be sending Daniel to his special ed preschool already having met two big IEP goals that we made this past spring.
  7. We are still struggling with the potty training and catching a ball but they will come in due time.
  8. His physical therapist feels the ball catching might be easier once he is wearing glasses again.
  9. He has glasses but he has outgrown them with his most recent growth spurt. Of course he hardly wore them and his blind mother just didn’t push the issue because we were working on other issues and he was running, jumping, climbing and other things without them. But lately he is really interested in glasses. He was very excited when I suggested he should get some new ones that fit. He sees his pediatric opthmalogist in September.
  10. It’s fun watching Zoë get excited about starting high school. She is really looking forward to this next stage of her life. She is so excited she even is willing for mom to take a back to school picture in front of the school on Freshman Orientation Day….silly girl! I suggested we do it off hours.
  11. Abby is happy to be out of her sister Zoë’s shadow for a year. In spite of their being so close in age (20 months) they are so much not alike. Abby definitely wants her back to school photo taken during off hours and not in front of her friends.
  12. Jodie is probably the most excited. She can’t wait to show off those new braces of hers.
  13. I still need to get some headbands and extra scarves for her to wear. Her haircut is just now starting to grow a little. Aaaaarrrrggghh!! I hope that she will never, ever do something like this again.

I see that I am not the only one out there with school on my mind. A Readable Feast: In a school daze. She has some great links that are all focused on gearing up for our kids’ school.

The purpose of the Thursday Thirteen is to get to know people a little better. Anyone can play. Leave your links and comments below if you are playing along and by all means, check out some of the other Thursday Thirteen players that you don’t already know.

  1. Thanks for stopping by my site. After a crazy summer, I’m hoping that once school starts, things will settle down. But I doubt it.

  2. I have no little people to send off to school so I don’t get the fun of shopping for school supplies. And I love school supplies! Do you think anybody would look at me strange if I bought my cat some nice number 2 pencils and a big box of crayons? ;)

    My TT is up!

  3. Actually, I have a son starting his special needs Kindergarten this year. He attended regulare kindergarten last year until I found out that he had Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, and OCD at the end of the year. I’m glad he’s finally gonna get some help!

  4. Staples might have cool commercials, but the supplies there were outrageous this year. I think I shopped *before* the sale, though and paid the penalty of preparedness!

    My Thursday Thirteen is up!

    Happy Thursday!

  5. I think this is a great list. I did not put my name in your linky list because I didn’t play this week but I have a little bit of time to visit the ones that posted…
    Have a wonderful day!
    Thanks for Thirteening!

  6. Oh, I love buying school supplies. Brand new pencils, notebooks, book covers… I always buy a bunch of cool stuff, and my kids don’t use half of it, preferring plain binders & yellow pencils. *sigh*

  7. I love shopping for new school supplies … at Walmart. Who couldn’t love 20 cent Crayolas and 10 cent notebooks. As for myself though I could spend all day in an office supply store (if the kids aren’t along that is). The little gadgets and what nots, organizers, and paper send the mind reeling. Love it!

  8. I love the Staples ads too. Shopped for my first back to school this past weekend. I think it was fun… Of course, I don’t know how I’ll feel once I am doing three seperate lists!

  9. I have always loved the beginning of the school year, but I especially do now that I am a tutor. School=work for me! :)

  10. My kids went back to school yesterday… I know… middle of the week is weird… but I was jumping for joy!!! LOL

  11. Yup, it is that time of year. Although I have a few more years before the girls head off to school.

  12. Monday? You are sooooo lucky! My 3 don’t go back until the 30th. then only for 2 days, then we have a long weekend! :)

    My 13 is up! :)

  13. We’re getting ready for our Not Back To School party on Sunday. It’s where we homeschoolers get together at a park and play…it’s so much fun!

I checked out Jodie’s haircut post… Yikes! DD did that back when she was 4. She had been bugging me to cut her bangs because they were too long for her… then I find hair all over my bathroom. She had taken baby fingernail scissors and cut not her bangs, she cut the length! We had to take her to a professional to get it fixed. I don’t think that she’ll do it again as she wasn’t all that happy with the results.
I totally don’t blame you for keeping scissors out of your kids’ hands though.

  14. Counting college I have been out of school for almost 6 years and I still feel like September is the real New Year!

I love fall…and now that I have a little one of my own, I know that in a short 4 years from now she’ll be off to J.K :(

    I just love school@!

  15. I just saw one of those Staples “Easy Button” commercials on TV and busted out laughing :)

Great list, my T13 is up also… hope you have a wonderful day and a terrific weekend :)

  16. I always loved the first of the school years. I enjoyed shopping for new clothes for the kids and getting their supplies. Now, I do it with my daughter’s children.

    Great TT.

  17. great list. mine is up. We just met the teacher today and the two young kids are excited, but my 11 yr old wants to be homeschooled.

  18. I can’t believe it is school time for you! we don’t start until Sept and we didn’t end till the end of June.

  19. My favorite Staples commecercial had Alice Cooper and his daugher (He was singing School’s Out). Cracked me up.
