iPad envy

So who has an iPad? Who has the iPad2? I’d be lying if I didn’t confess that I wish that I had my hands on that slice of Apple awesomeness.

Yes, back when Steve Jobs first unveiled the iPad, I snickered along with many others (mostly women) who wondered if there was a woman on that development team. If there was, surely she would have spoken up about that name and, well, just how wrong it could be. But quickly enough the iPad got well past that joke and proved to be the next level in tech-awesomeness.

Last summer, I had the privilege of becoming acquainted with a family whose lives were truly changed with the iPad they won…a five dollar investment in a raffle ticket. I still get tears in my eyes when I think how much Shannon’s son’s life has been been changed; how his world has opened up with this piece of technology. Sure it isĀ  amazing and fun, but it’s changing lives. You have to read Shannon’s account of their part in the iPad2′s big reveal to the world and be sure to watch the video…if you don’t get chills and well up with a tear or two or more then you are a stone…a very cold, stone.

I saw people with their iPads at BlogHer, in the workplace and at a recent nursing conference where I ended up hanging rather awkwardly over the shoulder of another attendee who had downloaded the syllabus and was following along with the lecture pulling up media the speaker was showing in his power point presentation on her screen where she could get a closer, better look.

Oh gawd, how I want one of these!

Then, just the other day while taking Jodie to a regular visit to her orthodontist what do my eyes behold but

iPads! An iPad for every patient chair, six patient chairs in all. Jodie sat in the chair and immediately began to explore. The orthodontist began to enthusiastically share with me what a wonderful asset this will be for her practice and for her patients as she set to work on Jodie. I looked at the orthodontist, smiled and said, “You’re welcome!

  1. We got our first generation iPad as a compromise: John wanted an iPad and I wanted a netbook. So we got the iPad, I took it to the Gallifrey convention and John has used it pretty much every night since then, mostly to watch video (Netflix mostly). It’s cool, and I’d like one of my own, but really, the first generation one we’ve got isn’t THAT great. I struggled to post an adequate-looking blog entry, and that was what I wanted it for.

    • thanks, Karen. Seriously, this is the kind of feedback I am looking for from people who have one, who use it…their likes, their dislikes, etc. It is definitely not in the Big Top budget. Still I can’t help but notice it because it is shiny and new; and I can’t help but wish that I had one too.

  2. I’m a writer full time and I love the touch screen keyboard on the ipad. It is as far above the standard keyboard as the computer keys were above the manual typewriter. It’s full size and takes getting used to but once you’re there – zip!
The word processor could use some tweaks but I’m sold. But add in on screen touch editing instead oaf control this and control that and the craft of writing is in a major league ballpark.
It’s also fun to play with and browse but I thought you might like to know that aspect. Oh- and light and easy to drag everywhere with a battery life of 10 hours.
Now if they could settle there differences with Adobe and it could just get flash video it would be perf…

  3. I have a serious case, too. I also want a Kindle, but I’m putting off getting one thinking that maybe I’ll feel rich enough to spring for an iPad instead.

  4. John- I’m going to have to head to the Apple store and play with one now. Thanks for the feedback.
Susan- My darling hubs bought me a Kindle for my birthday…probably to try and squelch the iPad envy a little. I do like it but I still want and iPad.

  5. I was with you on the iPad, but that same covetous feeling is sneaking up on me too.

  6. Heh. They are indeed nifty — I’m a huge fan of iBooks, and love being able to download free previews of recommended titles. I will think good iPad thoughts for you! And in the meantime recommend entering contests — I’m proof that it works, and there are certainly more than enough iPad contests going around.
