Thursday Thirteen #53: pearls

** Update:
If you clicked on the Thursday Thirteen link below you would see that this is the last edition. Had I known maybe I would have made it count…I mean maybe I would have come up with an amazing , memorable list that would be forever etched in your minds, or maybe it would be like an annoying ear worm (a brain worm!) that you just can’t get out of your head!

:::::sigh:::: what will I do with my Thursdays now?
Guess I will HAVE to do the laundry!
So many of blogs I regularly read I found through playing the TT every week. I imagine quite a few of my regulars found me via the TT too.
:::::sigh::::
Thursdays will never be the same. Goodbye to the little weekly meme that morphed into an amazing, phenomenal community.
Let’s keep that (community) real, ‘k?**

Some advice is as timeless and classic as pearls. Here are thirteen bits of advice that have been offered to me or I have dispensed that I think are pearls.

Thursday Thirteen #52: random

1. I am somewhat bemused how a recent blog entry of mine can become part of major drama on a message board that I have never heard of until now. But hello to everyone who has stopped by to see if I have horns and one eye. If you view the pictures on my sidebar you will see that I don’t. To the folks from that particular message board I say, welcome and please at least say hello.

2. I have told my daughter this before so it is okay to blog it…I hope. When it comes to romantic relationships, I swear she is more like a guy than the girl. Case in point, her recent break-up. She has gotten over it and moved on. He, on the other hand, hasn’t. Funny, but he was the one who ended the relationship…via MySpace.

3. The way dating has evolved with MySpace, instant messaging and text messaging added into the mix I have to say that I am so glad that I am an old married lady (24 years this May).

4. Can anything be more wrong than the father of your patient in the NICU hitting on you? Ick, ick, ick!

5. Anyone want to buy some cookie dough?

6. I am positively hooked on Harney & Sons Winter White Earl Grey Tea.

7. My daughter Zoë would like everyone to know that in just 11 days she will be 15.

8. More importantly, in 21 days I will be 45.

9. I think that Bill and the kids should give me this for my birthday.

10. I think it is really cool that 5 Minutes for Mom is hosting the Ultimate Blog Party just in time for my birthday. It’s not just for blogging moms either so I hope to see a lot of you there.

11. Yes, I had a big ol’ cheesy grin on my face as I typed #10.

12. Last night Bill and I enjoyed Sex in a Pan at Isadores.

13. It’s a chocolately dessert for two…what were you thinking?!

Thursday Thirteen #52: Did you know…?

While preparing my presentation for the WalkAmerica kick-off event this Friday I came across thirteen facts about prematurity, costs and the March of Dimes WalkAmerica. What a perfect Thursday Thirteen list!
Did you know…?

  1. A little more than $100 is the cost of an isolette for one baby for one hour.
  2. $250 is the cost to keep one baby alive on a ventilator for one day.
  3. $500 could cover an ophthalmologist’s first visit to check a premature baby’s eyes.
  4. $1,000 can buy a pulse oximeter to monitor the oxygen saturation of a baby’s blood.
  5. $1,500 is the cost of one dose of surfactant to treat one premature baby’s underdeveloped lungs.
  6. $2,500 is the cost per day for a baby’s isolette in the NICU.
  7. Last year, WalkAmerica raised $109 million nationally to help save babies.
  8. The money raised funds research to find ways to prevent premature birth and birth defects

Thursday Thirteen #51: to do

Happy February!
Time flies when you are having fun, or juggling too much. It’s February already! Can you believe it? I sure can’t. My thirteen this week is part of my things I need, must do this month.

1. Gather and turn in my skills checklist and education for my upcoming annual evaluation…already? yes, already. It seems everyone is done the same time of year.

2. get certain education done that I have been procrastinating on like the med test #3 and developmental clinic so that I can get my Clin I and go for the Clin II. It’s more $ folks and, of course, more responsibility too.

3. CALL and make appointments for the kids’ annual check-ups, orthodontist and eye exams…all of these should have been done last monh or maybe the month before. Someone hold me accountable on this please.

4. prepare my presentation for WalkAmerica kick-off next Thursday. I am speaking. YIKES!!

5. begin to contact former WalkAmerica teams and current registered teams.

6. meet with possible donors for a possible TeamDaniel fundraising event.

7. write an article for the local paper for WalkAmerica events

8. register for my upcoming required education.

9. get list of schools district is suggesting Daniel attend because they have special ed kindergarten programs and schedule visits.

10. visit private school alternatives I have in mind because I am currently less than thrilled with the district’s plan fo Daniel.

11. register Abby for her freshman classes next year.

12. get ready for the women’s retreat in Santa Cruz at the end of the month…three days, no husband, no kids, no work, lots of chocoalte and time with women friends hanging out in the Santa Cruz mountains. Is it the 23rd yet?

13. get ready for Zoë’s 15th birthday.

Thursday Thirteen #51: offended

Although it is a subject in the news in recent months, it has always been understood that there are some words that just are not appropriate to utter, not even in jest. They are rude, crude and offensive. Because I have had a discussion recently about one such word, my Thursday Thirteen this week is thirteen words that I, personally, find offensive. As the saying goes, like anything else, your mileage may vary.

  1. the “N” word
  2. the “F” word: Unfortunately I confess that I do slip and use this word. I offer no excuse except for the fact that it was a part of natural, everyday conversation in my childhood home. Nowadays it is only when I am back home that I realize how little I do use it in comparison.
  3. the other “F” word
  4. the “C” word
  5. shut up
  6. retard
  7. those people
  8. you people
  9. stupid
  10. my natural child(ren)…as opposed to my, what, fake child?
  11. neighbors: This one is offensive under The Big Top for reasons only my children understand
  12. any term meant to single out one’s race, religion or ethnicity in a negative way
  13. SAHM, WAHM, WOTHM or any other term that labels mothers
